Vital Statistics
About Dalits
The situation is so bizarre in so far as dalits are concerned in India’s 61
years of independence and following vital statistics of some fields will
evidence it:
1. Total population of Dalits – 166 million (16.6% of total population of the
country)
2. Total population of Tribals – 84 million (8.4%).
3. Crimes committed against dalits in 2006 - 27070. This is as per National
Bureau of Crime Report( Govt. of India) and maximum incidents go unreported
4. Literacy rate 54.69% as per census 2001.
5. Out of about 800 accredited journalists in India, there is none from dalits.
As per CSDS Survey, not even one dalit is present out of 315 key decision
makers in media.
6. In top 100 industrialists and rich people, there is no dalit and even if
this list is extended to 1000, then also there won’t be anyone.
7. So far there is no dalit Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in any business and
corporate establishment.
8. So far only two dalit Judges have found place in Supreme Court in 61 years
of independence.
9. There is no actor and actress in Bollywood (Film Industry).
10. The Cabinet Secretary is top most bureaucrat but no dalit has been
elevated to this position.
11. As per special component plan, the amount of expenditure of planned
central government budget for dalits should be according to their population
but this rule has been flagrantly violated, e.g., in 2007-2008 the total plan
budget was 205100 crores and distribution to dalits was only 12535.75 crores
whereas it should have been 32816 crores. Thus there is short fall of 20280
crores.
12. Out of 163 Missions of government of India abroad, about half a dozen
SC/ST Indian Foreign Service Officers have been posted as heads of mission but
none of them have been posted as heads of the missions / embassies in A and B
category countries.
13. Agricultural labourers 51.4% for Scheduled Castes and for others it is 19%
(data for 1999 to 2000).
14. Dalit enrollment in graduate education is 8.37% as against 91.63% for
others.
